HSNSERVE-2, Help for NSERVE Page 1 This sheet tells you how to use NSERVE, an automated directory of electronic- mail addresses at Syracuse University. Using NSERVE by mail: Send an electronic message to NSERVE on SUVM, i.e. NSERVE@SUVM (Bitnet) NSERVE@SUVM.BITNET nserve@suvm.acs.syr.edu (Internet) The first line of the message should be of the form WHOIS name The name may be the last name or the whole name. The message should have no subject line. Do not use titles. You can use an asterisk (*) at the end of one of the words of the name to specify "any ending" for that word, but you must specify at least the first two letters of the surname. The Answer: Your answer will come back in an electronic-mail message from NSERVE@SUVM. If more than one answer matches your search, it will return up to ten names that match. If two or more names are identical, it will list additional information about the department to which the person belongs. You can specify the exact person by adding this department information after the name, separated by a semicolon (;). Using the WHOSU Command: Some computers at Syracuse University have a WHOSU command. In this case you simply type the command at your terminal or personal computer: WHOSU name The WHOSU command will create the electronic-mail message and send it to NSERVE@SUVM. Example queries: Any of the following could be sent to NSERVE in the first line of an electronic-mail message: whois john doe Looks for someone named "John Doe". whois jane ro* Looks for someone with a last name beginning with "Ro" and with first name "Jane". JMW 5/90 HSNSERVE-2, Help for NSERVE Page 2 whois John Smith;xyz dept Looks for someone named "John Smith". "xyz dept" is the information about John Smith's department that NSERVE has listed. The only way you can get the exact text of this information is to ask about "John Smith", which (if NSERVE has more than one "John Smith") will return a list including its information about each one.
